Se analiza el perfil de las personas que apoyan mayores castigos hacia los delincuentes (actitudes punitivas), en particular su clase social. Desde la teoría del conflicto, las actitudes punitivas de los sectores privilegiados podrían entenderse como mecanismo de dominación para controlar a los sectores populares a través del aparato represivo del Estado. Otros sostienen que los sectores medios-bajos, amenazados en su status por los sectores populares, tienen actitudes más punitivas para reforzar las barreras de clase y para canalizar su resentimiento contra los beneficiarios de la seguridad social. Por último, en tiempos de incertidumbre económica y laboral y de riesgos incontrolables, los vínculos de solidaridad se debilitan, pudiendo incrementar las actitudes punitivas de los que se perciben en una situación inestable.
En suma, las actitudes punitivas hacia las personas tipificadas como delincuentes pueden expresar inquietudes que no están necesariamente vinculadas a las tendencias del delito, sino más bien a los conflictos de clase (hipótesis expresiva). Asimismo, la demanda punitiva de los sectores populares podría ser una respuesta instrumental a la mayor amenaza de la delincuencia en la que viven y la menor protección pública y privada que reciben (hipótesis instrumental). Para probarlas, se analizan numerosas encuestas de victimización de los residentes en el AMBA en la última década (2000-2010).

The profile of those who support harsher punishments towards offenders (punitive attitudes) is analyzed, in particular their social class. From a conflict theoretical perspective, punitive attitudes of the privileged could be understood as a mechanism of domination to control the poor through the repressive apparatus of the state. Others argue that it is rather the lower middle sectors who, threatened in their status by the underclass are more punitive towards criminals as a way to reinforce class barriers and to channel their resentment against social security beneficiaries. Finally, in times of economic and labor uncertainty, and incontrollable risks, the weak bonds of solidarity may increase punitive attitudes of those that perceived themselves in a more unstable situation.
In sum, punitive attitudes towards criminals may be expressing other anxieties that are not directly linked to crime trends, but rather to class conflict (expressive hypothesis). Besides, the punitive demand of the working class could be an instrumental response to the higher crime threat under which they live and the lesser public and private protection they receive (instrumental hypothesis).
